Description

For the solo traveller prepared to vacation in a modest but air conditioned comfortable accommodation while inhaling the sea’s salty air and want to be in a locale that is off the touristy beaten track coastline trekking (rocky terrain) at low tide, line fishing, kayaking, birdwatching or soaking up the sun in your backyard which is a beautiful salt water lake, this waterside compact studio is for you.

The property that is available for a minimum of 2 months, is on the eastern end of the island which is the gateway to boaters whisking off to the Exuma Cays and is directly opposite a developing upscale marina. It is best suited for adventurous solo travelers who are nature lovers, “water babies”, physically fit people who enjoy setting their own itinerary and seek to escape the hectic schedule that city living sometimes create.  If you are simply looking for more R & R then there is birdwatching, reading favorite novels or surfing the web in a beach chair right on the water’s edge with your favorite beverage. Remember your are in a tropical environment so bring your mosquito spray and tolerance for lizards.

Join me as I describe a day filled with excitement that begins right at your door step.

It feels like heaven on earth as I awaken to birds chirping on a beautiful sunny day and look out across the lake from my bedroom to the beautiful sea line of the Atlantic Ocean. I’ve had a quiet peaceful night undisturbed from the hustle and bustle of vehicular traffic, crowds and entertainment noise. My physical batteries are recharged and I am ready to plan my day’s event. My lakeside community is usually quiet with occasional activity from boaters launching from a nearby ramp to explore the Exuma Island cay chain, embarking on a day’s fishing trip or water-sports enthusiasts kayaking.

Today I begin the morning with yoga on the deck inhaling the fresh morning salt air as my muscles are stretched and primed for the day ahead. At its conclusion I sit on the deck with a cup of coffee in hand watching an egret patiently waiting on a school of pilchards to settle in place. These fine fish that provide food for many bird species and larger sea mammals traverse the warm shallow waters feeding off of sea grass algae and small creatures living under the mangroves.

The tide is low and that would allow me the perfect opportunity to scavenge the eastern coastline by foot for seashells and other treasures that may have washed ashore. If I act quickly I can explore the area, take a quick swim and be back before the high tide returns. With a light back pack, I include a bottle of drinking water, a sandwich, cell phone wrapped in plastic bag and a sun visor. I inform a family member of my itinerary for the day and embark on my journey from the steps leading down to the waterside at the rear of the property. It’s a rocky path at low tide so I carefully maneuver my way whilst observing the small fish that hide away from bigger prey among the mangroves.

Black and orange baby crabs scurry up and down mangrove branches enjoying the heat of the day and then scurrying away from passersby. Within 7 minutes of my departure I arrive at where the small bay opens up into the ocean and with mixed emotions I view the vast open sea line with blue, sea green and aqua-marine hues that is a great backdrop for selfie photos and then as I look to my right toward a nearby cay there is the reminder that this peaceful serene uninterrupted jewel is about to be developed into a mega marina with restaurants, townhouses and docking facilities. My consolation is to enjoy the moment that I now have and I focus on the white and grey egrets that take their pose and other migrating birds that fly
over as I make my way along the coast. I enjoy viewing the beautiful homes along the way and stop to pick up shells thinking they would be great for an arts and craft project.

The trek is moderate for an active person and with occasional dips in the cool ankle deep water and moments of rest to rehydrate, I resume my search for treasures (rope, buoys, floats, coral, conch shells, sponge). I continually monitor the sky for dark clouds in the event I have to abort my trek and return home earlier than planned. After an hour, it’s time to reverse my trek and head to a spot at the opening of the lake where the water is high enough to swim. The morning activities has opened my appetite for a tasty seafood lunch and had I not been so eager to get started, I would have left my salmon marinating for the grill.  Today it will have to be a grilled burger sandwich and chips from Baywatch at EBS backyard grill.

Baywatch is one of 3 living spaces that includes a rmain residential house with an attached studio and a stand alone studio literally steps away from the water. It’s an amazing view to awaken to and the soothing sound of rippling water to retire at nights to.  The studio is equipped with a comfortable extra length double bed, A/C, Wi-fi, netflix, wet room (toilet & shower combined) microwave, small refrigerator and a coffee pot for your morning brew.

If you are in town for other than R &R you will need a rental car as the property is 25 to 30 minutes away from downtown Nassau our oldest business district, major tourist attractions and 45 minutes from the western business centers. Other nature sites of interest include the Bahamas National Trust (BNT Village road,) the Primeval forest, the Cliffton heritage site and kayaking at Bonefish park.

A supermarket and restaurant is in close proximity however food can be ordered from a variety of fast food and local restaurants and delivered by a popular food delivery service.
