About Location

Why it is Famous ?

Santa Maria Navarrese is a part of Baunei, it is in the eastern coast of the island, only 10 minutes away from the airport of Tortolì- Arbatax. The well known tourist location is named after the church built in 1052 by the princess of Navarra, daughter of King Garcia Sanchez V, as a thankyou to the Virgin Mary for having saved her in a shipwreck in the vicinities of âMonti Insaniâ the current Monte Santo (Holy Mountain). Near the church there are some beautiful secular olive trees, an ancient well and a Spanish tower (built between 1785 and 1790) guarding the bay and its beaches. The beach of Santa Maria Navarrese is located in the centre of the village, it\'s an enchanting bay sheltered from the wind by some red porphyry rocks. The entire surrounding area is full of traces that witness an intense presence of the ancient Nuraghi civilisation: there are the giants\' tombs of âSantu Pedruâ and âAnnidaâ, âthe Nuraghi Loppellaiâ, âthe fortresses of \" Doladorgiuâ, âNuragheddu, Turruâ and âOrgoduri, Alvu, Co\' e Serraâ, that also preserve the remains of the village huts and ancient megalithic burial grounds. From the modern port of Santa Maria Navarrese, inaugurated in 1998, there are a variety of boat excursions along the coast, visiting the extraordinary coves of Cala Goloritzè, Cala Mariolu, Spiaggia dei Gabbiani, Cala Biriola, Cala Sisine and Cala Luna.

Facts About Destination

Almost an island on the Island, the Ogliastra regions offers visitors incomparable mountain and marine landscapes. From the sheer overhangs of the Gennargentu mountains to the white and inaccessible beaches along its coasts, you can get a glimpse of wild and uncontaminated Sardinia; currently the object of international research. The Ogliastrina cuisine is amongst the most genuine and authentic on the Island. Its preparation is simple and modest ingredients are used to bring out its dishes\' flavours. Let\'s begin with its hams and sausages in general, excellent appetisers, smoked using wood from the fragrant bushes of the surrounding area. Not to be forgotten is the variety of cheeses including goat cheese, salted ricotta and the characteristic casu axedu (sour cheese) made from sour curdled milk and to be tasted with honey. Another typical cheese is casu e fitta (cured sheep cheese) that is eaten with wild fennel and river-mint seasoned soup. We continue with perhaps the most well-known dish in Ogliastra: âculurgiones\" (small pasta sacks) filled with potatoes, garlic or onion, and cheese and flavoured with mint. âCoccois prenas\" (flat bread) stuffed with the culurgiones filling or with vegetables is also very good. Also to be remembered are the roasted meats, goat meat in particular, as well as other gastronomical curiosities like roasted lamb or goat innards. Amongst the characteristic bread varieties to be noted are pistoccu and âmoddixina\" (soft). Given the abundance of cheese, scrumptious pardulas must be tasted and don\'t forget to try âpanixeddas\", sweet flat bread made with Marsala. When one thinks of the Ogliastra region, its red wine of excellence, worthy accompaniment to this area\'s strong flavoured cuisine, Cannonau naturally comes to mind.

Area Information

Its varying scenery and colours makes Baunei one of the most interesting territories not only in the Ogliastra region, but also on the entire island. Its multi-shaped environment spreads over two of the most important natural monuments in Sardinia: the Supramonte and the Gennargentu. Baunei boasts spectacular panoramas and lush, colourful forests enriched by fauna e flora. It\'s the largest territory in Ogliastra and extends to the sea, offering the visitor its natural beauties such as the Cala Goloritzè to the Cala Luna coastline; ripped stacks overlooking the sea like Punta Pedra Longa otherwise known as \"Agugliastra\" and the nearby seaside village of Santa Maria Navarrese. We highly recommend visiting its most significant monument, the Torre dei Saraceni, which majestically rises on the beach. It has the shape of a truncated cone and was built to thwart off the pirates\' raids, sometime towards the end of the 1800\'s, on the ruins of an earlier outpost from the 1600\'s. The homonymous medieval chiesa and an antique well close to the tower are also worth seeing. |interruzione di pagina It\'s distinguished for the richness of its historical evidence even from an archaeological point of view, famous for the pre-historic betilius of Golgo, unique in its kind because of its human-like sculpted face. Unfortunately, the nuraghic complexes of Co \'e Serra and Orgoduri are in quite a state of decay. Noteworthy are the Tombe dei Giganti of Santu Pedru and Annida, the great monument of Doladorgiu and the Nuraghe Nuragheddu and Alvu. One of the most interesting sites is the Medieval church of S. Pietro in Golgo, close to the town and built in the XVIII Century. It is surrounded by characteristic \"cumbessias\" where the festivities of the 29th of June are celebrated. For passionate speleologists, this territory offers numerous points of interest, the most important being the Su Sterru pothole located in Golgo. It is the deepest in all of Europe and a frequent destination point for many excursionists. Situated on the slopes of Mount Santo, the town of Baunei has a charming, panoramic position that dominates the entire area. On its main street, a XVII Century parish dedicated to St. Nicholas appears with its unique dome, painted by Andrea Lusso in 1700-Century style. December 6th the patron St. Nicholas is celebrated and sometime in the middle of August, a fest celebrating goats is held. The municipality organises various events throughout the year, mostly during the summer, including: evenings of folklore, music and dance where the protagonists are the beautiful costumes enriched by precious materials.

Precautions

Health Care Information Foreigners must ensure that any special medication taken is authorised in Italy and you should also bring its prescription or a letter from your physician. It would also be a good idea to find out from your physician what alternatives can be purchased and taken without a prescription. Access to Health Care: In the case of an accident or unexpected sickness during a trip to a EEC country, EEC citizens can benefit from free or low cost health care and first aid. It\'s a good idea to have Form E 111 on hand, indicating your entitlement to health care. You can obtain a copy of this form at your local government health care office before departure. Only health care and first aid subsidised by your native country\'s health care system are covered. In some countries the treatment is free, in others partially free while in others again, the health care costs must be entirely paid for. Requests for their reimbursement are made at a later time. It\'s a good idea to keep all invoices and prescriptions. Travel insurance It\'s a good idea to have travel insurance. Regardless of the existing bilateral health care agreements, only a few EEC member countries entirely cover health care costs. An illness or accident abroad can bring about unexpected costly trip, hotel and travel expenses, a good reason to be insured. Vaccinations There are currently no vaccinations required by any of the 25 EEC member countries, however some immunizations are required or recommended for a few overseas countries. Always ask your physician before departing for these destinations.

Lifestyle

Sardinia; true and genuine land. Let yourself go; be delighted by the limpid colours of its skies and beaches, its rough vegetationâs stimulating scents; taste and discover its millennial culture. Sardinian cuisine is both simple and refined although its great variety is discovered only by those who have the desire to immerse themselves into a timeless world. Throughout all of Sardinia, from north to south, itâs not easy finding fast food restaurants where you can âeat and runâ. Rather, you will find places where you can stop and relax, where you can savour typical Sardinian gastronomical products, accompanied by the warmth and hospitality of its people. If you have never tasted the liqueur made of myrtle, nor smelled the honey-perfumed seadasâ or the fragrance of pane carasau, then you are ready for this journey. Sardinia will enchant you with its many treasures throughout the entire year. The Nuorese and Barbagia regions are considered to preserve the most authentic and purest Sardinian cuisine, just like the people that live here. Due to its essentially mountainous geographic position, this area has undergone very few substantial external influences and for this reason eating in the province of Nuoro is like travelling back in time. The cuisine in this part of Sardinia is based on the agricultural-shepherding traditions and on meat dishes such as skewered âporchetto\" (pork), still prepared using traditional methods; it\'s cooked in a hole covered by a layer of earth on which a fire is lit using aromatic wood. The same aromatic bushes are also used to smoke exquisite hams and sausages. Alternatively you can try sheep âa cappottu\" (boiled) and seasoned with potatoes, carrots and onions. Among the first courses âculurzones\" (small pasta sacks) filled with ricotta cheese and potatoes or soups with âfilindeu\" (pasta), fresh acidulous cheese and local crispy bread. As for the choice of cheeses, a numerous variety of sheep cheese enriches this menu. Not to be forgotten are the coastal areas including Bosa, with its excellent fish dishes, also part of this region. Here you will find âs\'azada\" (dogfish) and lobster. Its desserts are uniquely and finely decorated and include âtiliccas de saba e meli\", pastry twists filled with Marsala and honey or âcaschettas\", twists of fine, delicate pastry filled with hazelnut paste made from nuts grown the Barbaricine mountains. A unique tasting rarity is âsa pompia\", an orange-grapefruit hybrid that only grows in the eastern coastal region of the Nuorese, boiled and caramelised with strawberry tree honey. An ideal accompaniment to the traditional Nuorese/Barbaricino menu is a bottle of Cannonau; or on the other hand, try Passito or Vernaccia with dessert.
