Facts About Destination

Look for the rest? and the proximity of the tourist places? You've come to the right place. Castrisch is a small village, barely discovered by tourism.

Area Information

Castrisch, in former times AD 765 called Castrices..lat. castrum... Peel-stones with grooves above the village are prehistorically. The village name "castrum" reminds on an early defense-installation. The village-church is mentioned 840 as Carolingian federal-property, appears about 1340 as own parish up to the joining to the Reformation before 1537. In the 12 century are nobles of Castrisch (1137/39 de Castrises) mentioned. A castle was situated east of the village. Present it's only a ruin and hardly to see. A protected flat-moor and animals in original surroundings find nature-friends in the near Rhine-canyon. Beautiful sandbanks loads to lingering and to enjoying the splendid landscape. At the former Rhine-transition Sessafret, today Sassfau, was incumbent on the medieval court-place of the " free people above the forest ". At the brook west from Castrisch stood six grain-mills in accordance with tradition until the 19th century. From the former meaning of the agriculture still begets the houses with arch entrance in the village-kernel, which today is "subject to the home - and monument-protection in national meaning". Close to the Rhine-canyon, that Swiss Grand Canyon, directly at the front-Rhine is our quiet village. Amid full-green meadows and fields with groomed footpaths and surrounded from healthy forests, which protect us from avalanches. Castrisch is still hardly discovered from the tourism. The main street in the village-kernel is as a protected place of interest under home-protection and also in the federal inventory. Here we are about 400 people, many of us still speak the Romance language, but all German and some also English. And so there are no problems, if guests orders native specialties like Capuns, Maluns, Roast Venison in the restaurant. In the roof truss of the old village-church St. Georg lives during summer months Switzerland\'s at the present biggest bat colony "horseshoe-nose". Approximately 140 adult animals raises their brood before they move into their winter quarters in the rock-walls behind the village... ...and stone-eagles really are there again! They draw circles into the blue Grisons heaven and in summer time the pairs often have also a squeaker close by. Far from the noise, just in the middle of nowhere, there you find Castrisch. Nevertheless this middle is in a traffic-wise well developed valley.

How to reach

Bus traffic connects Castrisch with the valleys of the Surselva. With the Raetic Railway you can reach within 5 min. the city of Ilanz and after approximately 30 min. you are in CHUR, the oldest city north the alps with a 5000 year old settlement-history. Former the capital of the Roman RAETIA PRIMA, now the bishop-city and present main-place of the canton Grisons.
