Playas del Coco is one of the most easily accessible beach areas in Guanacaste. It is 22 miles west of Liberia with good road connections. Its name is derived from the cocoa-colored sand that lies between its two rocky headlands.
Many choose to visit Coco because it is close to the Liberia Airport and a short drive from dozens of beaches. Many expats even walk to Ocotal.
Coco beach is known for it's snorkeling, boating, scuba diving, sports fishing, swimming, water skiing surfing, wind-surfing, sailing, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, canopy tour, ATV, cycling, walking, and of course just relaxing on the beach. Surfers enjoy nearby Witches Rock and Ollie's Point in Santa Rosa National Park.
Safety: Even with the lack of people during the low-season (green) the area is very safe. The police station is practically on the beach, across from the main bus stop. Beach patrols on bike and vehicle are very common.
New Years party: New Years Eve in Playas Del Coco. It's quite the street party! The town fills with thousands of visitors from all over Costa Rica and the main street transforms to a mass of people, from the beach all the way up to the Super Compro junction.
