This restored historic home with its three acres of lawns and gardens is located at the center of the historic Village of South Britain. Within walking distance are dozens of landmarks: homes, churches, mill factories and the first library and town hall for the Town of Southbury. Nearby are hiking trails, bikes and horses to rent, bird-watching sites, and antique stores. 
 
The house with its grace and charm is set in two acres of natural beauty with an expansiveness of lawns and gardens framed by a ring of forests. This is a perfect place for social gatherings, family reunions, weddings and many types of events, or just a visit to a tranquil, beautiful place.
 
You will be living in a 1795 historically-preserved home with six fireplaces, the residence of the town's first doctor. The spacious living room has a massive fireplace, six foot high copper clad casting with Louis Sullivan ornament, Mies van der Rohe designed furniture, monumental fireplace and artifacts from around the world. The elegant dining room with its 17th century sideboard and fireplace is served from the adjacent, fully-equipped cooking kitchen. The second floor is reached from the center hall stairway. Besides the  bedrooms there are a large modern bath with jacuzzi and picture window views to the lawns, and a dressing room with bathroom and laundry.  There are beds for 8 with other places for 5 more.
 
The Greenhouse Room features a huge fireplace, full height plants and views to the lawns. It seats 12 comfortably as part of your rental and, for a setup fee, a place for as many as 28 for dinners and 50 for parties. 
 
The Lawns and Gardens are known for their beauty and tranquility, lauded for their successful events including weddings, celebrations, family reunions, and memoriums. you or we can set up the lawn with tables, chairs, buffet tables, tents and games likle croquet and badminton. Their is even a historic outhouse that can be made functional with the addition of wash basins and soap.
 
A discount of 20% will be given for a booking during your own rental.
For people coming to rent and/or attend events:  It takes 90 minutes to get here from NYC. Also, a mile from my house is the Southbury Peter Pan bus stop the second stop from New York City's Bus Terminal. It's a two hour trip.  From Hartford it's a forty minute trip by car and 20 minutes more by Peter Pan bus.

Jay Carow, a currently practicing architect and former professor of architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and universities in Malaysia and Iraq. Hed relocated his firm from Chicago to Southbury in 2010. Jay has had his own firm since 1969. You can find examples of his work and a short biography at the website for Carow Architect Plus. Widowed in 2012 he is now enjoying a second bachelorhood and most weekends in NYC or month's vacations around the world.

This historic home is a jewel set in a cluster of other jewels surrounded by rolling hills with a cascading river, wildlife, flowers, and stately trees. It is a wonderful place to live to live and visit if you love history, tranquility and nature. It is easily reached from Manhattan - 90 minutes by car and just over 2 hours by bus, and 50 minutes by bus from Hartford.

What makes this House unique
Of special quality are the views out to the lawns and forest from the glassed-in and sky-lighted solarium with its huge fireplace, once the summer cooking place. The room and this room and the lawns it opens onto have been used for multiple weddings, family gatherings and evants of all kinds.

The historic village's Congregational Church is across the street and worthy of a visit. Within ten minutes walk are dozens of hiking trails and a few miles away there's Woodbury, the first settlement in the area founded in 1673 and now the beginning of CT's Antiques Trail and beyond all of Litchfield County.
