Description

This historic gem is the most photographed home in Cape May. Built in 1869 by a wealthy Pennsylvania coal baron, John McCreary, its architecture is a mix of Victorian elegance meeting Gothic Revival. Architect Stephen Button designed this beautiful Gothic villa to feature a 60' tower. He also designed her with stenciled and ruby glass arched windows. This home features 4 large public rooms, 9 bedrooms and 9 1/2 baths (mixture of double beds, queen and single beds), all richly decorated with antiques, chandeliers, mahogany trim, beautiful wallpaper and Persian rugs. Shaded verandas and porches offer relaxing spaces for reading, watching the horse-drawn carriages go by or enjoying the summer breezes. Our location in the heart of Cape May's historic district puts you within walking distance of great shopping, restaurants, art galleries and, of course, our wonderful beaches and cool Atlantic Ocean.

There is on-site parking for 10 cars and a large side yard for bbqs, games, and family gatherings and more. A large modern kitchen renovated in 2012 features granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, custom cabinetry and new flooring. All bathrooms have undergone renovation as well.

Fantastic!!

We had an absolutely wonderful experience at The Abbey!!! Perfect location! Gorgeous property!! We would HIGHLY recommend this magnificent property to anyone looking for a truly unique experience in Cape May. We will absolutely be back again!! Also — great communication with the owner of the property! Five star experience!!!

A Wonderful Choice

The property owner, Barbara, was an absolute dream to work with. Extremely responsive, friendly and willing to give recommendations for local restaurants, shops, etc. In general, she did everything possible to make our stay a great one. The house was large, lovely, very user-friendly (especially for an old Victorian house) and the kitchen was fabulous for happy hour & dinners with our weekend group. Location can\'t be beat. The only reason I didn\'t give 5 stars on the cleanliness was because one of the coffee makers wasn\'t cleaned out from a past renter and had become a bit gross, which we cleaned. ...But this is really something minor, and something that the cleaning service should have checked, not something the owner had a lot of control over. The rest of the house was definitely very clean. I would recommend this property.

Can't imagine a better place

The location, facilities, owner-communication, and overall uniqueness of the property made for a perfect week. If you\'re looking for an unforgettable place that will make an ordinary week at the beach, extraordinary - this is it! Having so many bedroom (and bathroom) options, magnificent kitchens, a yard, decks, grilling, and parking means everyone is happy!

SPECTACULAR Magical Experience

Our extended family of 3 generations started our Holiday celebration in the Abbey. EVERYTHING was magnificent. The home had the nostalgic charm and the modern conveniences of an updated kitchen. Our family made wonderful memories with the backdrop of the Abbey and Cape May. We enjoyed the Cape May parade, Carriage rides, shopping, restaurants, sunrises, sunsets, brisk walks on the promenade and most of all the love of family. We could not have asked for a better experience. The house had everything we needed, was clean and well kept and decorated like an authentic Victorian Holiday. Barbara was fabulous to work with...she answered all our questions in a very timely manner, provided information and recommendations as asked and encouraged us to contact her with any issues. HIGHLY recommend this beautiful, magical and wonderful home. You will have an awesome experience!

Charming, spacious, and impeccably maintained

The photos do not do this memorable home justice! The rooms were each charming, unique, and comfortable. We had a family reunion here with people from MA, CT, NY, PA, NJ, and TX. The large wrap-around porch and side patio were continually occupied and so lovely. Our little ones enjoyed having a grassy yard too. The layout, with nine bedrooms and nine full bathrooms was perfect for hosting our group of smaller families, because we each had some space for peace and quiet and privacy when we wanted that. There were multiple gathering spaces for different groups to chat and mingle in the evenings between the kitchens and sitting rooms. Barbara was a pleasure to work with, and my large and diverse family all were completely satisfied. We loved strolling the town, lounging on the beach, and rocking on the porch. I recommend without reservation.

Wonderful Place for our Family Weekend

We’ve been renting The Abbey for the past three years for our female cousins weekend. The Abbey has so many wonderful features for such a weekend...a large fully equipped kitchen, wonderful porches and outdoor facilities, plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms and an incredible location...close to the beach and historic Washington Square!
