Description

Located on Mt. Desert Island in the village of Hulls Cove, Twin Gables House is a perfect home base for multi-family or couple groups. Recently a bed and breakfast, guests can share comfortable common areas with family and friends while enjoying the privacy of a bedroom with its own bath.

One half mile away is beautiful Acadia National Park with opportunities for scenic drives, birdwatching, hiking, biking, rock climbing, etc. Three miles from home is downtown Bar Harbor with its myriad of shops and restaurants as well as whale watching and kayaking tours.

The house dates back to the 1880's. Renovated in the 1980's it retains classic charm with its original hardwood flooring and floor to ceiling windows in the living and dining rooms. A sprinkling of antiques and many original paintings, many by local Maine artists, adorn the premises.

After a busy day enjoying the many area attractions, the comfort of the Twin Gables house awaits you. Cool ocean breezes take the edge off even the hottest days of summer. Just to be sure, six of the seven bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning. A comfortable porch with grill and a large backyard lend themselves to cookouts. Free WiFi is available.

From the house, at low tide, it is possible to access an expanse of rocky beach which also leads to the popular Chart Room Restaurant - open for lunch and dinner. Just a little further lies the Hulls Cove General Store plus the local post office. It is possible to leave your vehicle behind in our ample parking lot and take the free shuttle bus into Bar Harbor and around Acadia National Park from approximately June 21 until Columbus Day weekend.

  • Mindy Hill

I am a former Vermonter who moved to Mount Desert Island in1979 at the tender age of 22, shortly after graduationg from the University of Vermont. I fell in love with the ocean, the community of Bar Harbor and the park. I spent about 10 years as an overeducated waitress at a variety of area restaurants including the Chart Room which was coowned by my future husband. In 1989 I was able to hang up my waitress shoes and became the host of the Twin Gables Bed and Breakfast. I raised my two children while operating the b & b for 14  enjoyable years. But B & B's are notoriously time consuming so in 2007 we converted the house to a weekly rental and I have enjoyed more free time in the summer for park activities and the like. We summer in our cabin in the woods, about 3 miles from the rental house then move back in to the main house for the winter months.

Mindy Hill purchased this House in 1988

Why Mindy Hill chose Hulls Cove

My husband was working for the previous owner of this property when it was damaged in a house fire. The owner,  after some consideration, decided to sell the house as is rather than taking on the renovations. Russ (my husband) always the entrepreneur, saw it as a perfect spot for a B&B and the renovations gave us the perfect opportunity to add the private baths that B&B travelers so appreciate.

What makes this House unique

Probably my two favorite parts of the house are the kitchen window that has views of the ocean (though not as good in the summer as they use to be due to foliage growth) and the back porch which is open air and a wonderfully pleasant place to hang out in the summer. I find the location very convenient.

Perfect

Hull’s Cove was perfect for us. We had 15 family members, the youngest being 16. There was plenty of room for everyone. The kitchen has just about every utensil you could want. The 2 refrigerators were a tremendous help. The general location is good except for the traffic noise. That is the only drawback. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Hulls Cove

We loved our stay- everything was perfect! Thank you so much!

Family Vacation Acadia July 2019

The house and property far exceeded our expectations. The pictures on the site do not do it justice. The outside is very well maintained, from the grass and gardens to the porch we we were able to easily fit 10 adults and a baby. We ate every meal outside and were able to enjoy the different birds and small animals eating their meals at the feeders. There is even enough parking for 5 or 6 cars. This house is over 100 years old and very well updated and maintained. Mindy does a very good job getting the house cleaned and prepared for every family. There was nothing that we needed that was not available to us. The kitchen was fully equipped for any type of cooking. The grill and lobster pot outside came in very handy, for some great dinners. The living room was very comfortable as we sat around some late nights and discussed the day. The large dining room came in handy for the multiple game nights. All the bedrooms have their own bathroom. The beds are all very comfortable and better than many hotels I have stayed in. If some of the group went to bed early the door at the bottom of the stairs kept the upstairs quite to let them sleep. The basement has an extra refrigerator that came in handy for our large group. Also two washers and two dryers were a huge help. The house has everything you need for a large group. The location is also great, less than 10 minutes drive from Bar Harbor. About a 5 minute drive to the Acadia\'s Visitor Center. There is also a free bus from a stop about a 5-7 minute walk from the house which take you into Bar Harbor, or even into the park. You can tell Mindy takes pride in this beautiful home with the way it is maintained. Mindy, thank you for such a memorable vacation with all my kids and grandchild, it is one we will never forget. On our next trip to Acadia we will be staying here again.

Great House, Great Location!

This house is in an amazing location- 5 minute walk to the cove, ice cream and restaurant- 2 minute drive to entrance at Acadia. House is perfect for families- yard, large porch to hang out on, upstairs is very well separated from downstairs noise- great if you have kids sleeping. House is very well stocked with everything you need!

Great site for large group.

Older but well maintained and comfortable location for our large group. Friendly and helpful owner.

Wonderful stay!

Home was perfect for our extended family vacation...11 of us total (8 adults, 3 children[5,3,1], and 2 dogs. Plenty of room to spread out, stocked well beyond our expectations (household necessities, kitchen staples) great location to the park and downtown Bar Harbor. Exceptionally comfortable beds and the abundance of bathrooms was a definite plus (great water pressure and plenty of hot water!) We are all looking forward to a return visit.
