Description

The house lends itself to being a great venue for family holidays, or as a base for friends to stay and relax.

As far as bedrooms are concerned,  there are 3 sleeping areas upstairs. There is a loft room with a double bed and new single bed,  a mezzanine with 2 single beds, a large  bedroom with a queen bed and 3 single beds. Downstairs there is a bedroom with a queen bed, as well as a very comfortable couch in the lounge. We can accomodate 11 guests.

The house is two stories, with two lounges, a dining area as well as a TV (Sky) area. We have wifi, rare for Rakino.
It is an eco house, as Rakino is ” off the grid”, and we manufacture power through a solar system. As far as Rakino goes, our system is superior.

I love  pop art and music of the 60s and 70s.The house is decorated inside in and out with a music theme and images of various artists. Our deck, as well as the lounge,  is set up with speakers, and guests spend many hours sitting on the deck admiring the view and listening to their music off the internet.

Rats were eradicated from Rakino Island 10 years ago so as a consequence the native bird population has exploded. I have set up feeders for tuis and bellbirds on the deck, and these birds entertain with their song, and their antics. The tuis are absolute hoons!

As I live a few minutes from the house, I can  guide  our guests in how to manage our Eco house. I am a keen fisherman,  so again, I am on hand to explain the tides and  how to get to the Island’s best land- based fishing.

Guests have two options when it comes to method of cooking. Can either cook on the top of a wood fire, which also has an oven for roasts/ casseroles or cook on the kitchen’s modern gas oven  in.

The fire can not only used is for cooking, but also can be used to warm the house, and to provide the house with hot water.

The house has an alternate hot water system provided by a gas calaphont. I tend to use the woodfire in winter for heating water and for heating the house, but this can make the house too hot in summer and I use the gas system in summer to heat hot water.

There is a regular ferry service to Rakino from downtown Auckland, as well as a summer service from the North Shore. Details of this service, as well as timetable, can be downloaded from Belaire ferries website. Also, there are water taxis that have regular runs, or can be specifically hired. These run are from  Auckland and Waiheke. We can advise you further about the water taxis. We can also arrange pickup and delivery you and your gear to / from the Rakino wharf for the short car ride to the holiday home.

There are no shops on the island, so all provisions need to be brought with you onto Rakino. Remember your wine and tobacco if you smoke!
There are 3 kilometres of road and the beaches are within a short walk down these roads.
The house has 2 flush toilets, quite rare on Rakino. One toilet is in the bathroom with the shower. The other toilet is in it’s own room.
We have 2 hot water showers, one inside, one outside.

Special conditions:
The house is an eco house, as Rakino is ” off the grid”. . I have a superior solar system but at times power levels need to be managed if there are a number of days on the trot without sunshine. . I live a few houses away and can offer on - the - spot guidance with this. Solar power systems cannot cope with toasters, heaters, hair driers or straighteners, and so they cannot be used.

The house runs on tank water, and although there are two large tanks , 50,000 litres in all of capacity,  showers are limited to 10 minutes a day per person, this is 5 times the water storage of the average Rakino Bach.

Less than 45 minutes away from Auckland, Rakino is close to the big smoke but in reality a world apart. Great spot to change down a gear, and take it easy. The beaches are perfect for young kids, the fishing is fun, and the bach is very comfortable.

Rakino is beautiful! The home is great.
