Description

Civitella in Val di Chiana - also called Civitella della Chiana by residents - is a typical Tuscan hill town 550 meters above sea level, encircled by intact stone walls. The Blue Guide to Tuscany describes it as "delightful," located in a beautiful position on a wooded ridge with fine views of the spectacular countryside.

Civitella is reached by a good road, a spur off the highway that runs from Arezzo through a river valley joining the Chianti and Chiana valleys before branching toward Florence and Siena. The town is 18 kilometers (approximately 11 miles) from Arezzo, 40 km (24 miles) from Siena, and 60 km (35 miles) from Florence, by the A1 autostrada, which is just 8 kilometers away. Please view the area map for further details.

Civitella has about 200 inhabitants. There are two main streets running through the town, with many little walkways in between. There is an excellent cafe-pizzeria called II Vicolo in the main square, a refined new restaurant, L'Antico Borgo, a mom and pop grocery store with fresh bread every morning, post office, Monia's hairdresser, an antiques shop. In July and August the municipality hosts visiting theater groups festivities, and movies in the central piazza and castle. Swimming pools, tennis courts and horseback riding are all available in nearby towns. Trekking in the surrounding hills is also a popular activity. Down on the plain, visitors will find supermarkets, elegant malls, a health club, and most of the other amenities of advanced consumer society.
