The name 'High Fold’ reflects the practice of ‘folding’ the sheep in a protective enclosure. This walled enclosure is still in existence opposite the house. The house is surrounded by typical Lake District scenery of lush green valleys, becks (streams), hills and mountain peaks. The house overlooks the Troutbeck valley and Applethwaite to the East. The fells around Troutbeck Park, the Tongue, and the peaks of Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick lie to the North East. To the North lie the fells of Park Fell, Kirkstone Pass, the High Street range and the route of a Roman road. To the North West of High Fold is Wansfell Pike, from which Ambleside and Lake Windermere can be viewed.
