Description

Cabhalan Cottage is an ideal location for those seeking an 'away-from-it-all' holiday. A cosy modernised crofthouse dating from the early 1800s with wi-fi broadband internet in a secluded, peaceful spot 100 metres from the seashore and enjoying uninterrupted views across the sea to Skye, the Cuillins and the west coast of Scotland (as well as views of many otters on the shore below). The nearest house is half a mile away in each direction and there is a small sheltered bay with anchorage behind the cottage. The nearest post office is in Leverburgh (6 miles) where there is a very well stocked grocery shop, cafe and gift shop. Built around 1840 the single storey cottage was originally a 'blackhouse' and has walls up to 5 feet (1.5 metres) thick! Fully renovated, it now has all mod-cons, lots of character and is a simple but comfortable dwelling. Fully controllable electric central heating is provided via radiators, and double glazing makes it very cosy. Hot water is also provided by an electric immersion heater. This is all included in the rental price.

The cottage has a telephone, stereo CD player/radio with Ipod dock and now has satellite broadband internet connection. All electricity and local telephone calls are included in the weekly rental. There are a range of books and games so that in inclement weather you can enjoy watching the wild seas from the warm comfort of the kitchen recessed window seats. Quilts and covers, blankets and pillows are provided but not sheets, pillowcases or towels unless specially requested. Ideal for fishing, boating (details available on request), walking and beachcombing; there are sea-birds, otters, seals and basking sharks to be seen. Nearby are empty beaches, mountains and a golf-course. Of interest is the Iron Age history of the isles including the Callanish stone circles and the Ley Lines. There are many local artists and traditional craft skills not to mention the long and fascinating Celtic and pre-Celtic culture and Gaelic language.

Accommodation: Living room/Kitchen with electric cooker, fridge/freezer microwave and normal cooking equipment; the fully tiled bathroom has a shower, toilet, wash-hand basin and two washing sinks with an automatic washing machine. The sitting room has an open fire and recess alcove mirrored double bed and wardrobe, three piece suite and 4-channel television with DVD player. There are two other bedrooms, one double with views out to sea (we call it the ‘sun-bedroom’), and one with full adult-size bunk beds. There is a large entrance porch and hall. Access into and throughout the cottage is good without steps, even into the shower - hence our Disability Access Award 3. Vehicle access is right to the door with parking for 2-3 cars.
