There is a old story that Matlacha was made famous by Elvis Presley, the movie ‘Follow that Dream’ , was based on the book 'Pioneers Go Home', written from the experiences of the first caucasian people to settle in Matlacha. (However the movie was actually filmed on the Sanibel Causeway).

Matlacha resembles the old style Key West, rustic and quaint, so many areas like Matlacha are disappearing in the name of progress but Matlacha has been deemed Historical so as to preserve its unique qualities.

Matlacha pronounced MAT-LA-SHAY is an Indian name meaning Water to the waist, apart from the boating channels most times the water does not reach above the waist. Matlacha is a very popular fishing village where you can book a deep sea fishing event or rent a boat yourself.

Matlacha is a very popular area for kayaking, people come from all over Florida to kayak our calm tranquill waters. Matlacha and Pine Island are surrounded by a magnificent mangrove forest. This mangrove forest is Florida’s rain forest providing an ecosystem for its huge variety of marine life.

Pine Island
Pine Island is not home to white, sandy beaches or luxurious resorts, yet the simplistic charm of this nature abundant island tucked into Lee County’s northwest corner, has provoked a tourist frenzy in the recent years.

Surrounded mostly by mangroves, Pine Island stretches 17 miles from north to south and up to 2 miles wide. The six communities of Pine Island consist of Matlacha, Pine Island Center, St. James City, Bokeelia and Pineland.

Mostly known for its fishing, boating and farming, Pine Island is now becoming an artistic and cultural community. Numerous artists and writers now call Pine Island their home, inspiring the many art galleries and museums throughout the island. The numerous fine seafood restaurants offer the savor of the freshest catch, while the quaint shops offer many treasures for all tastes.

Biking, kayaking, hiking, concerts and tours can take you to the most wondrous places. The tranquility of this sleepy island is refreshing to all of those that visit or those that stay. Pine Island has been called “The Forgotten Island” in the past, but once you have experienced its beauty and serenity, you simply will not forget it.

The place was really nice and clean

The only complaint that i have is that maybe they might think about is spraying the outside area. I got bit up by no-see-ums really bad. It kinda ruined my stay there and i might not go back because i was miserable the whole time with big itchy welts. And yes...the whole time of my stay. They were outside; but still. I hate to give bad results. The cottage was awesome with great, friendly neighbors.

Fantastic!

We stayed on Cayo Costa for 5 days. Coming off the island and staying in Matlacha or Pine Island has always been our routine. Time slipped and I had to scramble to find a place. Luckily, I found this one and it was perfect for what we needed. Hot shower, warm bed, cute little place with kitchen. The pool was perfect for my little ones. And it\'s situated perfectly with so many places within walking distance.

Great time!

We were booked in Candy Cottage, but there was a mix up and ended up at another property owned by the same resort a few blocks away. The two bedroom unit we stayed in was clean and roomy with a million dollar view from the screen porch of the bay. We kept our kayaks at the orignally booked property for easy in and out kayaking. The restaurant the owner owns is great...fell in love with the spring rolls...delicious food. Would go back.

If you like Matlacha,it a s a good place for a short stay

Small bungalows w but brand new and clean, the owner is friendly ,a good place to stay a few days

Relaxing and fun

Wonderful experience. Perfect location. Matalacha isn\'t Mayberry like. Simple and friendly. Lots of shops in walking distance. The cottage was perfect for what I needed. Went fishing off the dock right behind the cottage. Florida has friendly fees for short term out of state fishing licenses. Owner responds quickly and is friendly and very helpful. Staying here is a no-brainier . Simply relaxing and worth every penny.
